Discover Hamburg's highlights

From the Elbphilharmonie to the historic city hall – here are our favourite destinations and how to reach them with ease.

Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie with its wave-shaped glass façade atop the historic brick base, the waters of the Elbe in the foreground

Elbphilharmonie

Rising high above the HafenCity, the Elbphilharmonie crowns a historic quayside warehouse with its sweeping glass façade, uniting concert hall, hotel and a freely accessible viewing terrace. From the Plaza, 37 metres above the water, you can take in sweeping views across the harbour and city, or spend an evening listening to a performance in one of the world's most acoustically refined auditoriums.

Getting there: From the hotel it takes around 40 minutes: about an 8-minute walk to Langenhorn Markt station, then the U1 towards the city centre to Jungfernstieg, changing to the U3 to Baumwall followed by a short walk – by car it is roughly 25 to 30 minutes.

Theatre & Musicals

Hamburg ranks among Europe's great theatre cities: along the harbour await the spectacular Stage musical theatres, reached in style by the musical ferry across the Elbe. In the heart of the city, the Hamburg State Opera, the Thalia Theater and the Deutsches Schauspielhaus pair world-class productions with the timeless elegance of storied venues.

Getting there: Take the U1 from Langenhorn Markt to reach Jungfernstieg in about 22 minutes for the State Opera and Thalia Theater (a short walk), then board the musical ferry from the harbour landing to the Stage theatres – roughly a 25-minute drive into the city centre by car.

Art & Culture

Hamburg's art scene unfolds around the Hamburger Kunsthalle, one of Germany's most distinguished museums, complemented by the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, the Deichtorhallen and a lively circle of independent galleries. We invite you to spend an unhurried day among old masters and contemporary works before returning to the comfort of our house in the leafy north.
